Rocky Mountain Fantasy

I was born on November 8, 1935, in Kaiserslautern, Germany. I started to play the mouth organ when I was seven years old and music has been in my life ever since.

The big change came when my grandmother gave me a zither. This zither needed some repairs before I could play it, but by the time I was 14 years old I was taking lessons in Klautern, at Music Schaller. I am happy to say that this zither I first learned on is still with me. At around the same time I started my apprenticeship in carpentry.

In 1957 I left Germany and came to Canada. I settled down on Vancouver Island. I found work at the CPRC (Canadian Pacific Railway Company) making good use of my carpentry skills. Today I live in Banff.

Playing the zither is my passion and I until recently performed in the Clock Tower Village Mall in Banff throughout the summer. I did this for the last 20 years. You could find me there almost every day between 10 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon. It gave me great pleasure to meet the many tourists from all over the world and to tell them about the zither and its old tradition. It also gave me an opportunity to get them acquainted with my zither music CDs and cassettes. I must be featured on thousands of photographs and videos taken there at the Mall. I also had my own TV shows in Calgary on Cable 10, something I never imagined possible when I first started to play the zither.

I often think of my grandmother who made all this possible. She would be so proud of me if she could see me playing the zither and giving joy to so many people from all over the world.
